Our school (and in fact, our whole district) has had a strong focus on literacy over the past two years. Our literacy team's goal is to highlight the literacy instruction that occurs across the curriculum, not simply in our English and Social Studies classes, but also in Science, Math, and our electives. We work to bring easy-to-use literacy strategies and tools to our teachers that they will be able to immediately implement in their classrooms. One of the building blocks of our literacy plan is providing accessible text for our students in all disciplines. This is often a challenge -- we want to make sure that ALL of our students have access to a rigorous curriculum. So, what are some "go-to" sources for supporting readers across levels?

 It's time for a Take5 and this week I've been mulling over a range of ideas from mindfulness to help teachers tone down stress to brain teasers which encourage students to raise up their critical thinking skills. I offer a must-listen podcast segement, the idea that kids need more than one caring adult in their educational lives, and an argument in favor of a constitutional right to high-quality public education. This week, I want to take a moment to touch on something that is at the heart of our profession and yet is rarely discussed in PD sessions or graduate school. I want to talk about sending emails to parents. Emails home can be a powerful tool in our work. We use emails to build relationships and to help ensure the growth of our students. We use emails to inform parents of challenges but also to celebrate student accomplishments. I also know that emails can be a major stumbling block for teachers. Write the wrong thing, the wrong way and you can end up creating chaos.

This week's Take 5 has a little something for everyone, covering topics from fake news in the classroom, new ways to approach data, and ethical dilemmas faced by teachers who interface with companies like Google.  Moreover, we know that as Hurricane Irma bares down on the coast of Florida, that the city of Houston ways heavily on Americans' minds. We can't stop thinking about students and teachers who have lost their homes and even their schools. We've got some resources that might let you send some much needed help their way.
