Emoji Reading

This is a kinesthetic way to let students interact with text. Using an emoji inspired guide, students write important ideas and take-aways on sticky notes from a reading, video, podcast or really any "text." Students record the information as they read and stick them on the front and back of their emoji guide.
Upon completion, students can share their sticky notes with classmates, rearrange them into categories, or even create a giant set of classnotes about a text by combining sticky notes. Students are also invited to create their own sticky note category if they find one missing from their emoji key.
We really believe that student choice is incredibly important -- so while we usually have students try this note-taking method once during the school year, we prefer to offer it up as many choices, including sketchnotes. We all interact with text in different ways -- so offering students choice is key.

We've developed emoji guides for both nonfiction and fiction texts, but students should also be encouraged to get creative!
